MavroCreative Website PSA: Know Your Numbers!

Know Your Website Numbers

I have a brief but important question:

Do you know your login information for your domain name and hosting?

We advise all of our clients to know this important information for a few reasons. We firmly believe that all of our clients should have access to their website information and not relinquish all control to their web designer.

Think about it.  Your website is your livelihood.  It’s the main source of information for your customers and is especially important if you have an online storefront.  If your site went down or your domain name expired and you couldn’t reach your web designer (or they have “disappeared” which is sadly sometimes the case), the biggest asset of your business is at risk.

Yet more times than not, when we begin the website design process for a new client and request domain and hosting information, our clients do not know this information. Their previous web designer set it up and they don’t have a clue where it’s hosted or registered.

What’s the difference between a domain name and hosting?

Domain Name

Your domain name is simply the name that you registered for your website. It’s what someone types into their browser to get to your website. Our domain name is  You purchase or register a domain name with a provider like GoDaddy, Namecheap,, Siteground, etc.

It’s incredibly important that you know how to access where you have your domain name registered because if you forget your password or your domain was registered in someone else’s name and they disappear, it can be super frustrating and difficult to regain access to the account.

We’ve had instances where our clients have had to take a picture of themselves holding their driver’s license to send to the domain name registrar to prove it was actually them. True story!

So make sure that you a) know where your domain name is registered and b) that you have access to the account.

Hosting for your website is where your website “lives”. It’s the place where all of your files are stored. Many times, your domain name and your hosting are with the same provider. But sometimes they’re not!  You’ll want to check with your web designer if you’re unsure of where your website is hosted.

Check Your Email

Once you know your login information for both your hosting and your domain name registration, make sure that the email address that is associated with your account is up to date. Your providers will most likely send advance emails about domain and/or hosting expirations but that won’t do any good if they are sent to an obsolete email!
