You may have heard about Google’s recent changes to its algorithm, which is a fancy word for the process that Google uses to decide how to rank your website page in its search results. What you may not know is that this change will directly impact your website and how it is found when people search for you on their mobile device.
“Googlegeddon” has arrived and for many businesses, the news isn’t good. Simply put, if your website isn’t mobile-friendly, Google is going to rank it lower. With almost 60% of all internet searches being conducted by mobile devices, this is a significant change. According to Google’s Developer’s website, Google believes that a “desktop version of a site might be difficult to view and use on a mobile device. The version that’s not mobile-friendly requires the user to pinch or zoom in order to read the content. Users find this a frustrating experience and are likely to abandon the site. Alternatively, the mobile-friendly version is readable and immediately usable.”
Google considers a website to be mobile-friendly if:
- The text is readable without having to tap or zoom in on the words
- The content is sized to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom
- Links on the page are spaced far enough apart so that the user can’t mistakingly click on the wrong link
- The page doesn’t have unplayable options, like Flash
You may have noticed that mobile-friendly websites do not have horizontal navigation bars. Instead, there is usually a drop-down menu which has three overlaying fat lines (often referred to as a “hamburger menu”). Users do not have to scroll horizontally to see the content.
Here is a graphic of the MavroCreative website to show you how it looks on my desktop versus my iPhone:
The content is now stacked vertically as opposed to horizontally and the menus is a hamburger menu.
